Foggy Lens

January 02, 2015  •  1 Comment

I've had this Yashica Mat-124 G  for about 6 years now. I have only ran 1 roll of film through it and the images came out terrible. The images had this hazy/bubbly look to them. I sat the camera back on the shelf and didn't think too much about it for a while. The other day I pulled it off the shelf and was giving it a good look and was trying to see about getting it cleaned/fixed. I cleaned the lenses inside and out and then I noticed it! The picture taking lens had a foggy look to it. I cleaned that lens a little bit more but it still was there. Time for me to get my tools out and see what I can do about this. I am NO camera repairman by any means nor do I have "proper" camera repair tools! So with tools laid out on white paper towels and my iPhone in hand to take pictures of the process, I jumped right in taking off the front lens.

These are the tools that I used.

Found the inspection/tested sticker inside from May 1st 1978!

I did not have a spanner wrench or the "proper" tools to take off the lens.

I used a small flat blade screwdriver and a small hammer and gently backed it off.

I put tape over the lens to keep from scratching it if I slipped with the screwdriver.

The inside lens wasn't that bad to do either.

And there it is! The foggy part was on the inside of the inside lens.

Much better now!

Put tape back on it to help with setting it down in there and getting the threads started and also to keep from scratching the lens when going back together!

Back in there and just pull the tape of and clean the backside of the lens.

No more foggy lens!

While I was in there I decided to clean the mirror to make thing a bit easier to see and focus.
